Are Standing Desks Good for You? Discover 7 Benefits now

How to solve the health problems of staff? Research shows that many health problems are related to sitting for long periods. And we strongly believe a good office chair is a good investment for your staff and same as an adjustable standing desk in the meantime. Employees will enjoy switching from sitting to standing whenever they are feeling sore from sitting for too long. Sometimes, even in the most expensive and fanciest of chairs, you may still get a little antsy or fidgety after a long time working. So press the button, and let the electric adjustable standing desk switch between sitting and standing mode. It will be not a problem for you anymore.

1. Why we need adjustable standing desk? Ergonomics: Get the Position Right

Why do you have to get up when you work 8 hours a day? The reason for this is that our spines cannot withstand such long-term stress. The joints and nerves are put under great pressure and blood has difficulty flowing. Over time, you may experience back pain. From a medical perspective, you should be able to adjust your standing desk so that your elbows are at a comfortable 90-degree angle, with your forearms supported by the desk itself when standing and by the armrests of your office chair while working.

Once your elbows are properly relaxed at a right angle, the other pieces of your posture puzzle should fall into place. “Having your elbows at a 90-degree angle naturally results in proper positioning of the wrist and forearm,” the doctor explains, “which in turn prevents you from leaning down or having a T-Rexing when approaching your desk to the keyboard. “

Now let us check it out, what 7 Benefits of Standing at Work

2. 7 Benefits of adjustable standing desk

2.1. Burns Calories

Standing burns more calories than sitting, even if you’re just standing still. Now the difference in calories between standing and sitting is not that big. Standing burns about 100-200 calories per hour, while sitting burns 60-130 calories. But over time, it increases.

Another calorie-burning benefit of standing at work is changing the way you think. When you’re on your feet, you’re more likely to stay in “healthy mode.” You’ll be moving around more throughout the day. You can do a few leg raises or take short breaks with squats or jumping jacks. Small changes in these activities will help you burn more calories during the workday.

2.2. Increased energy levels

An analysis of 53 studies published in the journal Applied Ergonomics shows that standing desks encourage workers to spend more time standing. British researchers found that 66% of workers felt more productive and 87% felt more energetic when standing for just one hour during the workday. The results were so useful that they created the Smart Work and Life program to encourage office workers to be more active.

Small movements and active moments throughout the day can help you stay awake and alert. When you’re truly “thinking on your feet,” you’ll feel more engaged. If you feel sluggish throughout your workday, adding some time to your feet can help you regain some energy and enthusiasm.

2.3. Improves Posture

2.4. Most important: Reduces Back Pain

Sitting or standing in a slouched position for prolonged periods stresses your lower back. More specifically, it puts pressure on the posterior structures of the spine, including the intervertebral discs, facet joints, ligaments, and muscles, explains Strang.

2.5. Helps with Wrist Position

If you’ve sat with a laptop on your lap while typing, you’ve probably noticed your wrists start to fall and “rest” on your keyboard. This can lead to wrist strain and pain. Sufferers of carpal tunnel syndrome, a pinched nerve in the wrist may notice more discomfort when wrists are held in the wrong position (although contrary to popular belief, there’s no correlation between keyboard use and CTS).

It’s good to be cognizant of your wrist position and strain on your body while you work. If you use an electric adjustable office desk, you can keep your arms comfortably bent at a 90-100-degree angle. This is often a more ergonomic position and may even improve your typing speed!

2.6. Keeps Circulation Going

If we look back at human evolution, our bodies were made to move. When we stand, we improve our leg muscles, our balance, and our core strength. We also prevent blood clots from forming in the legs. When people sit for a long time (such as on a plane), blood may slow and pool in their legs. In the worst cases, this can lead to a blood clot.

When we stand up, we move our legs and get the blood flowing throughout our bodies. In some studies, people who sat for long periods even had shorter life spans due to poor cardiovascular health. Standing often is part of a healthier lifestyle.

2.7. Boosts Your Mood and Focus

Finally, if your workday seems long and you find yourself distracted, standing up can give you a focus and mood boost to increase your productivity. A study at Texas A&M University found people who stood up at work in a call center were 50% more productive.

Standing helps us feel healthier, and when we feel well, we’re often in a better mood. Participants in standing studies at work have reported improved mood as a peripheral benefit of standing at work. So if you’re having a slow workday (or feeling down), get on your feet!

3. Why should I choose electric adjustable standing desk than Manual one?

Electric adjustable standing desk VS manual one

Before we start to choose adjustable standing desks for our employees, we need to check out what kind of standing desks exist in the market, and what is the difference between them. Usually, there are 2 kinds of standing desks for choice, one is a hand-crank manual desk, and the other is the electric adjustable standing desk.

In an ideal scenario, opting for an electric adjustable standing desk seems like the obvious choice, doesn’t it? It even sounds more impressive than a hand-crank manual desk. And it does offer certain advantages, especially if you’re always pressed for time (or perhaps a bit impatient!); it takes mere seconds to transition from sitting to standing. Moreover, it requires significantly less effort compared to manually winding up the desk to the desired height. However, all these conveniences come at a cost.

On the other hand, the more budget-friendly adjustable manual sit-stand desk may take a bit more time and effort to adjust, but it grants you a greater sense of control. There’s something oddly satisfying about manually cranking up a standing desk to your preferred height!

Here is the simple comparison chart!

4.The Noise of the Motor

Manual standing desk

2.Lower Weight Capacity
3.Uneven Loading

4. Are electric adjustable standing desk overrated?

Sure if you don’t have a standing desk, just stretching or taking a water break may be enough. However, if you are deep in some work, standing at a desk stretching your legs, and pacing around may not be helpful to keep you focused on work. Then you might need an electric adjustable standing desk. Since sitting at a desk is just as important as standing at the desk, some permanent standing desks or any manual standing desks require a lot of effort or time to adjust. Sure you could use a high chair with a permanent standing desk but getting good ergonomics out of a high chair can be quite challenging. Manual crank standing desks do allow you to switch between sitting and standing and are usually quite a bit cheaper. However, the process of cranking is slow and a burden that results in people being lazy and not bothering to switch as much.

So for most people, if you want to get a standing desk you should probably save up for a fully electric motorized standing desk no matter working at home or in the office. The good thing though is that budget electric standing desks are pretty widely available these days.

However, there are some key things that we’d look out for before you go and just buy the standing desk in the market. Such as IKEA, Amazon, eBay, and so on.

5. What key things should be considered when choosing electric adjustable standing desk?

5.1. Memory buttons on the controller

Like memory buttons, which are on the control panel. Get a desk with a memory button if you can. One click to stand, One click to sit. Simple, and completely worth it. Just press it, let it run and you will enter working status quickly and improve work efficiency. There is no doubt that 2 memory buttons are good enough for a single user but more is better especially if have multiple people using the same standing desk and need different heights.

5.2. Height range for the electric adjustable standing desk

Next, check the height range for the standing desk. Normally the minimum height is 750mm for sitting and usually the maximum is 1100mm for standing. You can adjust it arbitrarily within the limited height range to accommodate any standing or sitting height you need. The depth of the electric adjustable standing desk normally is 600mm and the thickness is 25mm.

5.3. About noise

Using an electric adjustable standing desk in the workspace or at home for personal use, noise from the motors isn’t an issue. At the office on the other hand, in an open concept, you might ignore the sound from your workmate sitting next to you when she/he is adjusting the desk height. Normally, people don’t move the desk up and down all day long. If you work at home, it seems it’s attractive for naughty kids as the desk could be up and down with just pressing a button. We have set that the desk would be in a sleep state for 5 minutes after finishing the adjustment. The naughty kids couldn’t wait that long and will stay away from the desk.

5.4. Table top and desk base

A lot of companies will sell their motorized legs and tabletops separately. So do we, only buy tabletop or desk bases with height adjustable functions available? To choose the MDF/MCF table top you want is welcome. As to the tabletop colors, we have normally white, natural wood, walnut, and also other customized colors. The white legs desk base is the most popular one and also the most cost-effective one. For sure, we have other options and please feel free to contact us for details.

5.5. Motor and control panel

Even a single motor is almost smooth enough for desk height adjustment but 2 is better, it depends on the budget of your project. The controller is normally on the right side of the desk, you could choose metal or plastic material. LED controller is also a very nice option for a manager or director’s desk.

6. Some advises when using an electric adjustable standing desk

6.1. Protect the motors.

When you are installing the electric adjustable standing desk, there is one important thing we should remember. Please do not hit the motor with sharp objects or drop on the floor. Suppose the legs hit the ground, the motor inside may be damaged.

6.2. Notice cable length.

The cables need to be long enough for use and accommodate the adjustment of the standing desk. When you use an electric adjustable standing desk and adjust it to the highest top, the cable length should be longer than the usual ones.

6.3. Notice the load bearing range of the table top.

Even the desk base is metal and it’s strong enough to hold the tabletop. But we still suggest reading the manual kindly and getting the detailed data of tabletop load-bearing range.

6.4. Overheat protection.

There’s an overheat protection procedure for the motor, if the user keeps operating the motor for over 2 minutes, to protect the motor, it will stop running and wake up again after a while, it could be 2 or 5 minutes. Get this information from manual or vendors.

6.5. Single motor or dual motors standing desk?

For home working and less budget, a single motor is enough. For office building projects, single motor electric adjustable standing desks for staff and dual motors for managers. This is more economical purchasing advice. For more options, please feel free to contact us and we could offer a full project solution.

Considering all of these, at least the standing desk wasn’t a fad that eventually got bored with and people still very much continue to switch between sitting and standing regularly. If I had to make the decision today I’d still definitely spend the extra cash to get another electric standing desk all over again. How about you?
